The Need
Bethesda Hospital needs a new Cancer Care Program space because of an outdated facility and a growing patient load. The new space will be an addition to the hospital which will also include space for a Obstetrics Centre for Labour and Delivery.

This project will mark the start of an initiative called the Bethesda Centres of Excellence It will focus on improving the regional services for the 60,000 residents of the southeast region, including cancer care, obstetrics, diagnostics, rehabilitation, surgery, special care, and emergency.

The Reasons
• The Steinbach Community Cancer Program is the third busiest of 14 rural cancer care programs in Manitoba. New patient referrals have increased 82% in the last five years.
• Our present facility is small, cramped, and outdated (600 square feet in the basement of the hospital).
• It is impossible to maintain patient privacy in the crowded space.

The Project
The proposed new Cancer Care Centre will occupy the
main level of the new addition to the hospital.
• It will include an estimated 6 treatment spaces, 3 private exam rooms and associated support space.
• The second level will provide future space for a modern obstetrics centre for labour and delivery.
• The lower level will used for future training and education for staff and patients.

The Goal

• The Bethesda Foundation has committed to raise a total of $4 million dollars for
this project and future Centres of Excellence within the Bethesda district.
• These will include projects like the following:
– an expanded emergency room with the addition of an observation unit.
– a redevelopment of the surgical suites
– creation of a special care unit
– an expanded lab and x-ray services
– improved occupational and physiotherapy services
• The Bethesda Foundation is partnering with the Manitoba Government to build the Centres of Excellence
• 100% of the money received by the Bethesda Foundation through this campaign
will be used for the Centres of Excellence
